720 and 1080

The HPX500 is another Panasonic Camcorder that supports worldwide formats. 1080 and 720 in HD and all SD formats, all with Variabls Frame rates.

Although 1080i is currently the leading HD production standard, this market position was strongly influenced by early HD adopters in the USA and Japan, where 720p technology was not available initially. However the position is changing and there is growing support for progressive production round the world, particularly in Europe, where 720/50p and in the future 1080/50p are proposed production standards.

For the High Definition television there are specifications for a standard with 1280 horizontal samples and 720 active lines in progressive scan and a standards with 1920 horizontal samples and 1080 active lines in interlaced scan.

Close-Up Interlace Freeze Frame

Please note the fine engraving. How does that relate to High Definition? The differences between interlace and interpolated information is shown here. This is a freeze frame from an interlace camera, and Notice that it has the same confusing areas of moire known from Standard Definition.

Close-Up Progressive Freeze Frame

Please note direction of the fine engraving pattern. However, the reality is the lines curve under as shown on this 720p image. So a progressive capture is more representative of the subject matter.
